Hello!

I am the owner and a master-level massage therapist at Matthews Massage and Wellness, Inc. I have been a licensed massage therapist since 2002. I graduated from UNC Charlotte in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. I then continued to the New York Institute of Massage, in Buffalo, NY.

In 2005 I opened A Healing Touch Therapeutic Massage, Inc. Over the years, my business grew into a holistic practice including an infrared sauna and encompassing more alternative healthcare practitioners. I changed the name to Matthews Massage and Wellness, Inc. in 2024.

Over the last 22 years, with many hours of continuing education, I have specialized in Integrative Bodywork, Structural Energetic Therapy, Prenatal and Postpartum Massage, Fertility Massage Specialist, Swedish Deep Tissue Therapy, Massage for People Living with Cancer, Hot Stone Therapy and Medicupping.

I am a former athlete and have firsthand knowledge of what gets sore and how to manipulate the muscle tissue to give the perfect release of tension and stress. I have focused my practice on muscle tissue recovery and reduction of myofascial scar tissue. Good communication with you, the client, is very important to me.

I don’t just treat the symptoms that you’re feeling; I like to hunt down the cause. I will ask questions not only to aid in alleviating symptoms but to get to the root of the problem because if we can treat the cause, then your symptoms will go away.

I have a passion for educating my clients and therapists. I taught massage at South Piedmont Community College for 4 years. I love teaching; it makes me a better therapist. I have a desire to pass on the wisdom and knowledge I have been so gifted to accumulate and use to help grow my practice.

I have connected with many wellness professionals over the past 20 years and have a deep referral list.  If we cannot help you with treatment, I will not hesitate to refer you to someone who can.

What's the most rewarding aspect of being a massage therapist for you?

The most rewarding aspect of being a massage therapist is to be able to help people not only get out of their pain patterns, but to educate them as well on how to stay out of pain.

If you had a superpower for a day, what would it be and how would you use it?

I think my super power would be to slow down time. I always have so many things I want to do and there is never enough time to do it all.

Can you share a memorable success story from your time as a massage therapist?

Of the many success stories I have experienced over the years. I remember one client who came in with severe back pain.

She loved to play golf and be outdoors working in her yard.  But for a long time, she had this debilitating back pain.  She couldn’t enjoy any of those activities.  She saw many specialists and she didn’t want surgery.

The first visit was when I first started my own business. I listened to her explain what she had been feeling and asked her many questions about how it started and how it had progressed over time. I explained to her what we were going to do to try and help. After her first visit, she was still in pain, but a little less.  I was worried I couldn’t help her and she said, “Please, I don’t want to see anyone else. I am tired and I have some relief from the last session, which is more than anyone else has done.” So we continued with the sessions.

After the second and third visit, she was able to golf for the first time in years! She was so excited and continued as my client for many years to stay on top of the problem. She moved away from the area several years later and I still get Christmas cards from her.

What's your favorite scent or essential oil to use during massages?

My favorite scent is either Lavender or any of the mint oils.  I do a raindrop therapy that encompasses 7 different essential oils and will envelop the entire office with the scent of an Italian garden. Everyone comments about the fragrant office after one of those sessions.

What are the best benefits, in your opinion, of massage?

The best benefits of massage, in my opinion, are the lasting effects long after the session is over. Lower blood pressure, the stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest). Helping people realize where the tension is truly coming from, not necessarily the place of pain. Also, it just makes you feel good. After a massage things seem clearer and you feel more grounded.

Rachael has been my massage therapist for over 20 years.

She is excellent in her interpretation of my issues and in her ability to help in the repair.

In the beginning I only had massage for various muscle related injuries.  Rachael can get to the source of the problem and give me relief.  Now I go to Rachael on a routine basis to keep my body functioning.

Rachael makes a difference in my life.  As a healthcare professional, I recognize her knowledge and ability to dig out the damage.  I highly recommend Rachael.

Rachael is without question the best massage therapist that I have ever encountered.

She is skilled, empathetic, effective and has the ability to read and understand an individual patient’s particular needs.  In 2015 I became a client of Rachael’s after being involved in a very serious motor vehicle accident the year before.  After just surviving, I was told that I might lose my foot and may never walk again without a prosthesis.  Multiple leg and foot surgeries, surgeries to both shoulders and other “banged up” anatomy created real challenges.  Rachael’s care became a vital part of my recovery process.  Her various treatment strategies were vital to the restoration of my mobility, range of motion, body realignment and helped tremendously with pain reduction and management.  Today I still have a fully functional leg and foot, walk properly without a prosthesis, have almost no pain and have recovered a high quality of life.  I remain a grateful client.
