Discovering Anatomy: My First Experience with a Human Dissection Class

Recently, I had the privilege of attending a human anatomy class at Experience Anatomy. This unique four-hour course allowed me to learn about the body in a way that textbooks and models can’t quite capture.

I’ll be honest—I was both excited and nervous. The idea of learning from human donors brought up a lot of emotions. But from the very beginning, our instructor put us at ease. They explained that the people we were about to learn from were “donors” — individuals who generously gave their bodies to science and education. We were reminded to always speak of them with the utmost respect, as though their family members were in the room with us. That set a powerful tone for the class.

What really struck me was the reverence shown to the donors. Before diving into the anatomy, we paused to reflect on the incredible gift these individuals and their families had given us. It was clear that this was not just a class — it was an experience of gratitude, respect, and learning.

I joined this class because I wanted to deepen my understanding of the body, particularly the intricate ways muscles, fascia, and connective tissues interact. As a bodyworker, I’ve always been curious about what’s happening beneath the surface of my clients’ skin. This class offered a chance to see those connections firsthand and to honor the people who made this learning possible.

Walking away from this first session, I felt both humbled and inspired. It reminded me that the human body is not only a vessel for life but also an incredible teacher.

I realize that not everyone is equipped to read about this experience, so I will create a hidden category sharing these classes. If you’re fascinated by this level of learning, please click below to read blogs that I post, sharing my journey and how it impacts me as a massage therapist.
